HOW Teen Challenge Functions?

TC serves both teenagers and grownups. Teenager residents– who normally pay a month-to-month cost– go to the program’s alternative school. Adult locals, who get vocational training, pay absolutely nothing. Both groups learn abilities like finance; work at tasks in the cooking area and laundry, and discover how to minister to others through social work. All go to chapel and pray daily, finding out “biblical concepts” for virtuous living.

Research confirms Teen Challenge’s impressive record of success. Inning accordance with Time magazine, “research studies have found that Teenager Obstacle has a 70 percent success rate for those who finish the program, far better than nonreligious treatments.” A current study at Northwestern University found that “exabusers appear to lead normal lives after Teenager Challenge, holding down full-time tasks and apparently very hardly ever having to return to treatment.

WHAT is DONE?

TC is not a medical program. Individuals are referred to as “trainees,” and they think “the research study and practical application of Biblical principles” are “the transformative element of our recovery program.” They specify, “While we recognize psychological and medical competence to attend to a number of the problems of dependencies, we approach these issues from a spiritual point of view.”

Moneyed generally through charitable contributions, Teen Challenge does not charge month-to-month fees to participants in the programs. Each center has special entry procedures and expenses, however, for instance, there is usually a $1,500 induction fee upon entry. Admission normally happens around 2 weeks after being accepted.

Teenager Challenge programs are divided by both gender and age, with separate centers for males and females. Adolescent programs usually serve teenagers in between ages 12-17, while adult programs serve people between ages 25-35. Using a “Christian faith-based healing model,” programs last from 12-18 months long.

They stress, “We are confident that a restored relationship with God, through Jesus Christ, can transform those who are broken into lively, free, and sober people.”

Regarding the strictly Christian nature of the programs, the site states, “We offer complete disclosure to everyone who enters Teen Difficulty that this is a Christian faith-based program. Entryway into all Teen Challenge programs are voluntary, and part of that voluntary arrangement include involvement in all elements of the program, consisting of the religious elements of the program.”

Upon finishing a Teenager Obstacle program, numerous additional programs are readily available to help promote graduates’ ongoing development.

What is it like in the Program?

Clients need to follow housekeeping guidelines and do everyday chores. They keep to a tight schedule that begins with breakfast at 6 a.m., consists of treatment program classes throughout the day, choir practice and work-skills classes. There is some leisure time in the evening for viewing TELEVISION in the lounge and hanging out, however it’s lights out at 10:30 p.m

. The long-term program has 4 levels for clients to complete. The function of Level 1 is to obtain to the root of exactly what’s causing a specific to abuse alcohol and drugs and to recognize devastating and regular ideas that result in drug abuse, according to a pamphlet. Level 2 concentrates on recovery from previous failures and damaged relationships.

Level 3 helps customers deal with character development and spiritual growth. And Level 4 involves preparation for continuing care, which includes looking into education, employment, real estate, financial planning, relationship skills, establishing a support system and regression prevention.

Residents are not supposed to leave the structure without approval, and passes are provided moderately. In the long-term program, residents get an eight-hour pass after remaining in the program for three months. After 6 months, they get a two-day pass, and after 9 months, they get a 4- or five-day pass, Mahoney stated.

Random drug Testing is carried out periodically, alcohol and tobacco screening, and homeowners are evaluated when they return from being away for any length of time. Sometimes individuals have regressions, Mahoney stated.

” And if they return and say ‘I didn’t recognize how tough it was going to be,’ or they may have concealed it and we discovered in a drug test, we’ll say ‘you require more time,'” and their stay is extended, he said.

Is TC EFFECTIVE?

In 1973, An independent study compared results of Teen Challenge with that of a transactional analysis method at a Terminal Island Federal Correctional Organization healing community, and with a third group who got no treatment.

While the varieties of topics was little (17 in each group), he found proof to support his recommendation that, while Teen Obstacle was an “effective” treatment (with a drug recidivism rate after 29 months of 32%), Transactional Analysis was a “very effective” treatment (with an equivalent 16% rate), suggesting that possibly the lower recidivism rates were a result of TA changing the addiction idea of the self-image better and at a slower rate. He hoped that Teenager Obstacle would integrate some psychiatric therapy into their treatment model.

A Wilder Research research study of 154 former locals who finished in between 2007 and 2009 reported that:.

– 74 percent of adult program graduates reported no use in the previous 6 months.

– 58 percent had actually participated in school since graduating.

– 77 percent were either working 30+ hours a week or were a full-time student.

– 80+ percent rated the total quality of TC as “exceptional” or “excellent.”.

– When asked to call what assisted most, the faith-based elements of the program were discussed most frequently.

We located 59 previous Teen Obstacle students in 1995, in order to compare them with a similar group of addicts who had spent one or two months in a hospital rehab program. His outcomes, part of his PhD dissertation, were published in “The Teenager Difficulty Drug Treatment Program in Relative Point Of View”.

It was discovered that Teen Challenge graduates reported returning to substance abuse less often than the healthcare facility program graduates. His outcomes also revealed that Teen Obstacle graduates were even more likely to be utilized, with 18 of the 59 operating at Teenager Obstacle itself, which relies in part on previous clients to run the program.
